From the FreeP: Cohen traded to Bruins

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

Like many Boston University students and alumni, former Terrier defenseman Colby Cohen might be trying to find tickets for this weekend's series with No. 8 Boston College.

The 2008-09 Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player and 2009-10 Hockey East First Team All-Star is on his way back to the Boston area after being traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the Boston Bruins for defenseman Matt Hunwick on Monday afternoon.

Cohen will report to the Providence Bruins, Boston's American Hockey League affiliate, on Tuesday.

"It's definitely exciting," Cohen told The Daily Free Press in a phone interview. "I'm thrilled about it. I've already talked to all the boys [at BU]. I'm going to try and come to the games this weekend, hopefully, if my schedule allows it."

From the FreeP: Rosen goes from never playing forward to scoring a goal as a center Saturday

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

Ben Rosen looked like a veteran center Saturday night when he scored his first collegiate goal.

With his team trailing 2-0 midway through the first period, the sophomore from Syosset, N.Y., picked off a pass behind the net and quickly zipped the puck to freshman defenseman Garrett Noonan at the right point. Rosen then got himself open in the lower right circle and took in Noonan's return pass before turning to the net and snapping a shot through Brown University goalie Michael Clemente's five-hole.

But Rosen is not a veteran center, or even a veteran forward for that matter. In fact, Saturday's 4-4 tie was only the fifth game he has ever played at center.

Jack Parker's going to need a bigger closet.

His No. 2 Boston University men's hockey team came back from deficits of 2-0 and 4-3 against former ECAC foe Brown University, but only managed to squeak out yet another tie – its fifth of the season and fourth in its last six games – in Saturday night's 4-4 affair at Agganis Arena. The Terriers (7-1-5) now lead the nation in one-point performances.

"I have a closet full of ties," Parker said. "I've got enough ties. Five ties. . . Unbelievable."

David Warsofsky's post-game transcript 11/27

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

On whether the team is happy with the tie
I think it’s a little bit of both. I think it’s obviously tough to get down 2-0 but I like the way we battled back. We were able to get a tie, but it’s not good to go down 2-0 especially against a team like that. Sometimes the mentality is taken a little bit lightly especially coming off of Thanksgiving break. I thought we did a good job battling back. To tie a team like that, on paper they might not be the best team, but they work real hard and if they keep it up, they’ll go somewhere in this league.

On what they saw of Browns game at UNH and what they saw of Brown Saturday night
We just saw that they’re physical. I think everyone saw that in the rink tonight. They were real physical. They finish their hits everywhere. They didn’t let up. They played smart although they took some penalties. Other than that, they’re a pretty smart team. They played their systems well. I think it was a game of who was going to outwork the other one. At times, we outworked them and at times they outworked us and it just came down to a tie at the end.

Coach Parker post-game transcript 11/27

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

Opening statement
I have a closet full of ties. I’ve got enough ties. Five ties. Are they all at home? Four of them at home? One’s at Merrimack, that’s right. Unbelievable.

Overall, I thought both teams played well. Both teams played hard. We knew exactly what we were going to get from Brown. We’ve seen them play. They’re a very good hockey team. I tried to explain to my team that they’re the Merrimack of the ECAC. They’ve been a cellar-dweller for a long time, now all of a sudden they’re a real good team. They’re playing very hard, and they’ve got enough talent to beat you but usually they beat you by outworking you and they certainly tried to outwork us tonight. But I like how hard we worked and how much we kept after them even down two-love.

We attempt 85 shots to their 41 so. A couple of bad reads gave them a couple goals, but they worked hard for them too. I liked the goals we got and I liked the guys who got them. Good to see Megan get another goal. Alex keeps scoring goals. Joey got a nice goal going to the net. We don’t get many of those. We got to make sure we get guys going to the net.

We were 1-for-7 on the power play but I liked, we had 15 shots, we moved the puck around, we were pretty sharp there.

You’re down 2-0 it’s good to get out alive I guess. When you’re up 3-2, you should win the game at home.

Grading the Terriers: 11/27 vs. Brown

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

Offense: B+
The Terriers attempted a total of 85 shots to Brown’s 41. Only half of BU’s shots (42) were on net, but 42 shots on goal is still nothing to be ashamed of – in fact, the shot total was a season high for BU. The Terriers started early with 17 shots in the first period - which was another season high for - and they continued to outshoot Brown in every period. The Terriers also netted four goals and came from behind to tie the game after falling into a 0-2 hole early. Each line had a goal as Alex Chiasson, Joe Pereira, Wade Megan and Ben Rosen all scored on the evening. The Terriers at times made the ice look like a shooting gallery, but they also had plenty of good chances where they could have/should have capitalized.

Defense: C+

The defense could have been better, but it also could have been worse. A team certainly does not want to allow four goals, but they also only gave up 23 shots. Freshman Patrick MacGregor made his debut on Saturday with sophomore Sean Escobedo serving as a healthy scratch, and he did not shine, but only looked out of place on one goal all night. Kieran Millan did not play his best game, and the defense did not pick him up. As Parker said, if you’re winning a game 3-2 at home, you don’t want to end in a tie.

BU ties former ECAC foe Brown 4-4

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

The No. 2 Boston University men’s hockey team returned to its tying ways Saturday night when its non-conference game with Brown University resulted in a 4-4 draw. It was the fifth tie of the season for the Terriers, whose record now stands at 7-1-5 on the season.

BU controlled most of the play for the night – it outshot the Bears by a margin of 42-23 - but Brown (3-2-3) got on the board early on goals by forwards Jesse Fratkin and Harry Zolnierczyk in the game’s first 3:01. Five and a half minutes later, sophomore forward Ben Rosen tallied his first collegiate goal and point on a feed by freshman defenseman Garrett Noonan.

The Terriers tied it up in the second when senior co-captain Joe Pereira tipped his own rebound past Brown goalie Michael Clemente. Sophomore forward Alex Chiasson gave BU its first lead of the contest five minutes later with a snipe that found the lower right of the net.

Terriers ready to take on Brown in non-conference tilt

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

It would be easy for fans of the No. 2 Boston University men’s hockey team to overlook Saturday night’s game. Brown University isn’t exactly a college hockey powerhouse. It’s a non-conference contest sandwiched between rivalry series against No. 6 University of New Hampshire and No. 7 Boston College. And it’s over Thanksgiving break, so Agganis Arena won’t be nearly as full or as loud as usual.

Don’t expect the Terriers to overlook it, though.

“I thought we had a great practice yesterday and a great practice today,” said BU coach Jack Parker on Friday. “Today was a fabulous practice. So it seems like we’re ready to go. These guys know that this is the Merrimack of the ECAC. Nobody thinks they’re as good as they are, and they’re way better than everyone thinks they are.”

Grading the Terriers: 11/20 vs. UNH

By Jake Seiner, DFP Staff

Offense: B+
Opportunistic was the word of the night at Agganis Arena Saturday night. BU made UNH pay dearly when it turned the puck over, much to the demise of UNH coach Dick Umile. The Terriers scored four goals on 28 shots, with all four goals coming in the second period. The scoring outbreak was especially impressive with junior Chris Connolly missing the second and third periods with an injured finger. Sahir Gill and Charlie Coyle both had superb offensive nights, while Alex Chiasson (1 goal, 1 assist) and Corey Trivino (2 assists) each had multi-point nights. Chiasson’s tally was a rocket of a shot –– the sophomore rifled a short-handed one-timer over UNH goalie Matt DiGirolamo in the second that tied the score at 2.

Defense: C+
BU played better in its own zone than it did last night, but the Wildcats did manage to rip 82 shot attempts, and put 43 of them on goal. UNH had 18 grade-A chances by this reporter’s count, and BU was still occasionally turnover-prone in its own zone. For the second straight night, freshman Garett Noonan received high praise from coach Jack Parker, and the rookie –– who was a late summer fill-in when both Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk opted for professional contracts –– is proving himself a more than capable Division 1 D-man. He and Adam Clendening (1 goal) have emerged as a solid D-pairing, with Noonan allowing Clendening to put his superior offensive skills on display with a sturdy stay-at-home approach. Noonan also has been getting time on the power play, and has looked fairly at ease in that position.

BREAKING NEWS: Connolly out 4-6 weeks with broken finger

By Scott McLaughlin and Jake Seiner/DFP Staff

Junior forward and co-captain Chris Connolly will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken finger, according to BU coach Jack Parker. Connolly injured the finger in the first period and did not return to the game. After the game, Connolly said he got the finger caught and thought it was either broken or fractured. Parker confirmed in his press conference that it was broken.

Rollheiser's career-high 41 saves leads BU to 4-2 win over UNH

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

The No. 2 Boston University men’s hockey rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 4-2 triumph over the No. 7/8 University of New Hampshire on Saturday night. Junior goalie Grant Rollheiser made a career-high 41 saves and sophomore forward Alex Chiasson netted the game-winner with 3:38 remaining in the second.

The Terriers (7-1-4, 5-1-4 Hockey East) took their first lead of the night on Chiasson’s shorthanded tally. Junior forward Corey Trivino forced a turnover at the offensive blue line and set up a one-timer for Chiasson, who rocketed a shot over junior goalie Matt DiGirolamo’s shoulder and just under the crossbar.

Terriers kill 5-on-3, then play dead

By Jake Seiner/DFP Staff

DURHAM, N.H. – After falling into an early 2-1 hole, the No. 2 Boston University men’s hockey team appeared to turn a major corner late in the first period and into the early parts of the second Friday night.

Then the No. 7/8 University of New Hampshire took back the keys to the car, stuck the Terriers in the backseat and put the cruiser on autopilot for the rest of the game.

Grading the Terriers: 11/19 vs. UNH

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

Offense: D
The offense got off to a great start when David Warsofsky scored on BU's first shot of the night. It was all downhill from there, though. The Terriers struggled to anything at all in the offensive zone for the remainder of the night. They couldn't create chances in transition, they couldn't set up any sort of cycle and they couldn't put shots on net when they did get chances -- 14 of their 45 attempted shots missed the cage and another nine hit defenders before ever getting that far. BU finished the game with just 22 shots on net, its second-lowest total of the year. It also recorded just four grade-A chances in the game, marking a new low for the season. Joe Pereira was the only forward Jack Parker picked out as having a good game in his postgame press conference.

BU falls to UNH 5-2, ends longest opening undefeated streak since 1977-78

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

DURHAM, N.H. - All undefeated streaks ultimately come to an end as the No. 2 Boston University men’s hockey team’s 10-game undefeated streak did Friday night against No. 7/8 University of New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center.

But it was the crushing fashion in which the Terriers (6-1-4, 4-1-4 Hockey East) fell to the Wildcats (6-1-3, 4-0-2 HE), 5-2, that had players, coaches and fans alike scratching their heads Friday night.

BU was dominated in all facets of the game by its northern host in their first matchup of the season. Perhaps the biggest deficiency came in the battle for shots, which the Terriers lost by an astound margin of 49-22, forcing junior goalie Kieran Millan to make a career-high 44 saves in his first losing effort of the 2010-11 season.

From the FreeP: One undefeated streak faces off against another in BU-UNH home-and-home

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

Either the No. 2 Boston University men's hockey team will extend its tie streak to five games or at least one of the two longest unbeaten streaks in the country will come to an end this weekend when the Terriers meet No. 7/8 University of New Hampshire.

BU (6-0-4, 4-0-4 Hockey East) is the only undefeated team still standing and its 10-game unbeaten streak is the longest in the nation. The Wildcats (5-1-3, 3-0-2 HE) own the second-longest streak at eight games. Faceoffs are set for 7 p.m. Friday night at UNH's Whittemore Center and the same time Saturday night at Agganis Arena.

From the FreeP: Notebook: BU drops to No. 2 following ties

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

As it turned out, the Boston University men's hockey team trip to the top of the national rankings was more of a pit stop than an extended stay.

The Terriers, who moved to 6-0-4 after tying Merrimack College in successive nights last weekend, dropped to No. 2 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls and were usurped by University of Minnesota-Duluth, which swept its own weekend pair with Michigan Technological University to improve to 9-1-2, in both polls. BU had moved up to the top spot in the country just last week for the first time since the conclusion of the 2008-09 national championship.

From the FreeP: Terriers more good than lucky to walk away with tie after being down 3-1

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

NORTH ANDOVER -- Say what you want about ties.

They don't solve anything. They're a waste of a perfectly good hockey game. They only leave you frustrated. They're like kissing your sister.

Just don't tell that to the No. 1 Boston University men's hockey team after the Terriers gladly exited Lawler Arena with one point following Saturday night's 3-3 stalemate with Merrimack College.

BU headed into the second intermission trailing for the first time this season as the Warriors rode two early power-play tallies to a 3-1 lead after two periods. However, BU coach Jack Parker wouldn't allow the Terriers to sit and lay down in what could have been the final frame, especially after what he believed to be two solidly played frames from BU.

From the FreeP: Working overtime

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

NORTH ANDOVER -- The No. 1 Boston University men's ice hockey team must love playing hockey, because it went to overtime for the third consecutive game on Saturday at Merrimack College. The Terriers overcame a 3-1 deficit in order to play the extra five minutes, finishing with a 3-3 draw.

Junior forward Corey Trivino potted the tying goal for BU with 4:42 to go in the final frame when Merrimack goaltender Joe Cannata lost track of the puck beneath his skate and Trivino tipped it just over the goal line.

"I thought this was a much better game than [Friday] night," said BU coach Jack Parker. "Two ties, two overtime games, you would think they would be similar, but I thought both teams played much better. There was more flow to the game.

Grading the Terriers: 11/13 at Merrimack

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

Offense – B
After scoring two or fewer goals in each of its last three games, it may have been easy to question the BU offense. Saturday’s 3-3 tie with Merrimack didn’t solidly quiet all doubters, but it was a step in the right direction for the Terriers. In what BU coach Jack Parker would later call the goal of the game, sophomore forward Wade Megan got the scoring going with his first of the season with only 30 seconds left in the first period to cut two-goal Merrimack lead back down to one. Junior forward Chris Connolly would have to do the same thing in the third as he knocked home a bouncing puck in the third to make it 3-2 Warriors. Junior center Corey Trivino finished what his linemate had started with a poke past a sleeping Joe Cannata to tie at three with under five minutes to go in the third. The Terriers tallied those three goals on 29 shots with Megan’s netter coming on one of just four shots in the second frame. That evens out their average to three goals per game, good enough for third in Hockey East.

BU and Merrimack get extra physical in 1-1 tie

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

After the first eight games of the season, no one knew exactly where the line was for Chris Connolly, simply because the junior captain for the No. 1 Boston University men’s hockey team had never crossed it by that point.

That is, until 12 minutes into the third period of the Terriers’ 1-1 tie with Merrimack College Friday night.

Moments after being shellacked by a Warrior defender along the left boards, Connolly arose with an especially inquisitive look on his face directed toward the men in black and white. After not seeing any arms raised other than his own, the BU left winger continued on his unmerry way down the ice in the Merrimack zone.

Grading the Terriers: 11/12 vs. Merrimack

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

Offense: C+
Merrimack’s Joe Cannata is one of the best goalies in Hockey East and boasts a .940 save percentage, but BU had plenty of chances Friday that it failed to capitalize on. Sophomore forward Ross Gaudet had the only BU goal of the night, and even that tally just barely went in on a weird bounce off his shoulder. The Terriers spent most of their time in the offensive zone either passing the puck or battling on the boards. Their night was epitomized by freshman forward Matt Nieto who, with less than 30 seconds to play, skated into the slot, paused, and then passed the puck to the boards. BU took its best shots in the first period, when the team combined for 11 Grade-A opportunities, but they just did not have the extra oomph needed to get the puck past Cannata.

BU ties Merrimack 1-1, remains undefeated

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

The No. 1 Boston University men’s hockey team skated to a 1-1 draw against Merrimack College on Friday, earning its second straight tie and remaining undefeated on the season. Both goalies stood on their heads in the contest, as BU junior Kieran Millan saved 35 of 36 shots and Merrimack junior Joe Cannata stopped 32 of 33 to earn the game’s first and second stars, respectively.

“I think both teams played hard,” said BU coach Jack Parker. “Both goaltenders played great. That was indicative of the three stars -- goalies one and two stars. But in general, I didn’t think it was a very well executed game by either team. I don’t think there was a lot of room out there. Sometimes there’s a lack of plays because people were mishandling the puck.

“The old John Wooden line, ‘Be quick, but not in a hurry.’ We seemed to be in a hurry tonight, and that causes us to have not as much of a smooth entry on the attack. Plays down low, we had some chances to make some passes and it seemed like we were rushing things.”

From the FreeP: BU playing first games as No. 1 against Merrimack this weekend

By Jake Seiner/DFP Staff

The No. 1 Boston University men's hockey team will put its unbeaten record on the line with a home-and-home against Merrimack College this weekend, hosting the Warriors on Friday before traveling to Lawler Arena on Saturday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.

The Terriers (6-0-2, 4-0-2 Hockey East) are fresh off a 2-2 tie with No. 5 University of Maine last Saturday, while Merrimack (2-2-2, 1-2-1) dropped a 2-0 decision to Providence College in disappointing fashion following a 4-2 win over then-No. 2 Boston College.

"They are one of the most physical teams in our league," said BU coach Jack Parker. "No question about it. They present problems that way."

Hockey East Power Rankings 11/11

1) No. 1 Boston University (6-0-2, 4-0-2 HE)
There’s no reason not to have the Terriers at the top. They’re one of just two undefeated teams in the country, and they’re the only lossless team that has played at least five games (Yale is 4-0-0). BU is third in Hockey East in offense (3.25 goals per game) and second in defense (2.12 goals-against average), and it ranks first nationally with a 92.5-percent penalty kill that has killed 36 of its last 37. Junior goalie Kieran Millan is second in the league in GAA (1.95) and tied for second in save percentage (.936).

Terriers top USCHO.com poll

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

The Terriers are ranked No. 1 in this week's USCHO.com poll, receiving 31 of 50 first-place votes. It marks the first time BU has been ranked No. 1 in the country since the end of its 2008-09 national championship season.

BU jumped up two spots from No. 3 after tying Maine, which climbed from seventh to fifth this week, on Saturday night. The Terriers leapfrogged over Minnesota-Duluth, which stayed No. 2 after splitting a series with No. 10 North Dakota, and Miami, which fell from first to fourth after a loss and tie against No. 20 Ferris State.

Elsewhere in Hockey East, Boston College fell from fourth to seventh after losing to New Hampshire, which moved up one spot to No. 9. The Wildcats also beat Massachusetts-Lowell this weekend. No other Hockey East team cracked the top 20 and Merrimack, BU's opponent this weekend, was the only other one to even receive votes -- it totaled seven points, 125 off of 20th.

Update: BU also nabbed the top spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll followed by Minnesota-Duluth, Miami, Yale and Maine respectively in the top five.

From the FreeP: Powerful penalty kill able to keep Black Bears at bay

By Arielle Aronson/DFP Staff

Before its high-profile matchup with No. 7 University of Maine on Saturday, the No. 3 Boston University men's ice hockey team may have been anticipating how its third-best penalty kill in the nation would match up against the Black Bear's seventh-ranked power play.

The Terriers got answers to any lingering questions early in the game.

After just 1:54, BU had to kill off 57 seconds of a Maine 5-on-3 advantage by virtue of cross-checking penalties to sophomore defenseman Max Nicastro and sophomore forward Alex Chiasson. The Terriers were up to the challenge, allowing only one shot on goal during the 5-on-3 and forcing Maine to pass more often than it would have liked.

From the FreeP: BU fights back to tie No. 7 Maine Saturday

By Sam Dykstra/DFP Staff

It took a strong penalty kill that had to halt one of the country's toughest power-play unit on six occasions – including a five-on-three opportunity in the game's first two minutes – an extra-attacker goal and an overtime hold, but the undefeated streak continues.

The No. 3 Boston University men's hockey team tied rival No. 7 University of Maine 2-2 Saturday night at Agganis Arena in the teams' first matchup since the Black Bears defeated the Terriers in last season's Hockey East semifinals. This season's Terriers (6-0-2, 4-0-2 HE) are now the first BU team to go undefeated in their first eight games since the 1977-78 NCAA championship squad.

Grading the Terriers: 11/6 vs. Maine

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

Offense: B-
Really, this is a tale of two halves. In the first half of the game, BU couldn't do anything on offense. A lot of that had to with the fact that taking penalties didn't allow the Terriers to get into any sort of flow, but they also looked disjointed and jumpy with the puck on rushes. When they did get into the zone, they struggled to cycle the puck or set anything up. But after they stopped taking so many penalties -- BU took seven in the first 30 minutes and just two in the last 30 -- the offense settled down and started creating chances, including Chris Connolly's power-play goal late in the period. That momentum carried over to the third, as the Terriers outshot Maine 14-9 in the frame and registered 12 grade-A chances -- three more than they had in the first two periods combined. That pressure culminated with Charlie Coyle's tying tally with 1:21 left in the game.

BU ties Maine 2-2

The undefeated streak will live to see another game.

The No. 3 Boston University men’s hockey team needed a late goal by freshman forward Charlie Coyle to tie No. 7 University of Maine 2-2 Saturday night at Agganis Arena.

Junior co-captain Chris Connolly scored the first goal of the contest to put BU up, but goals for defenseman Jeff Dimmen and forward Gustav Nyquist gave the Black Bears the advantage in the third.

Junior goalie Kieran Millan made 34 saves in the tie and will have to wait another day to get the 50th win of his NCAA career.

Cisse undergoes surgery; done for year

Boston University men's hockey forward Yasin Cisse underwent surgery today to repair a torn ankle tendon and will miss the rest of the 2010-11 season, according to BU coach Jack Parker.

Cisse injured the ankle tendon in BU's regular-season opener against against Wisconsin. The injury is the same one that cut Cisse's United States Hockey League season short last year.

Parker said Cisse will redshirt this season.

From the FreeP: Terriers gain ground in polls

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

The Boston University men's hockey team climbed to No. 3 in both national polls this week following its sweep of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. The Terriers picked up seven of 50 first-place votes in the USCHO.com poll and topped four of 34 ballots in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

One of the teams BU leapfrogged was archrival Boston College, which fell from second to fourth in both polls after splitting a weekend series against Merrimack College. The Terriers sit a mere point ahead of the Eagles in the USCHO poll and are just four points better in the USA Today poll. BU's next opponent, the University of Maine, is ranked seventh in both polls after beating the University of Vermont on the road.

From the FreeP: Defensive unit stands strong after Nicastro game misconduct

By Scott McLaughlin/DFP Staff

It would've been understandable if the Boston University men's hockey team's defense wore down late in Saturday night's game. After all, it had to play all but the first 6:19 of the game with just five defensemen following sophomore Max Nicastro's game misconduct for hitting from behind.

Instead, BU's back line got stronger as the game went on.

After giving up 14 shots to the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in the first period, the Terriers held the River Hawks to 11 shots over the final two periods, including just four in the third.

From the FreeP: Captain to the rescue

By Jake Seiner/DFP Staff

Backed by senior co-captain Chris Connolly's game-winning tally with 27.5 seconds left in the third period, the No. 5/6 Boston University men's hockey team completed a weekend sweep of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell with a 2-1, come-from-behind victory at Agganis Arena Saturday night.

Connolly netted the goal on a shot created by junior assistant captain David Warsofsky, who carried the puck into the UMass-Lowell zone, held off a defender with a power move and slid the puck to Connolly center-slot.

Connolly put the puck on net, and the disc snuck between the legs of UML goalie Doug Carr.
